Why I Still Want to Learn, Even When AI Can Tell Me Everything

As I use AI more and more, I often find myself wondering: when AI can tell us so much and do so much for us, why should we still study?

We used to get knowledge from books. Then the internet arrived, the amount of information exploded, and what mattered became how well you could find what you needed. Now AI finds that information, organizes it, explains it, and even produces the final result for us.

So what should we be learning from here on?

My guess is that beyond learning knowledge, learning through experience will matter more and more.

Learning you don't need now, but will someday

Honestly, what I loved most at first was that AI let me study only what I wanted.

I used to think that learning a new field meant reading books or finding a course. These days, I study the topics I'm curious about by talking with AI.

Lately I've been studying HCI. I ask AI for a study plan, learn the concepts, and get feedback as I work through problems. When I don't quite understand something, I ask again, and I answer essay-style questions to check whether I've really understood it.

Without AI, would I have even thought of studying HCI theory this deeply? I probably wouldn't have found it easy to start.

But is being able to learn only what you want always a good thing?

When I think about it, we often don't even know what we don't know.

Take the math I learned in school as a kid. Back then, I didn't really understand why I had to learn it. I never imagined I'd go on to study computers and become a developer.

But that math helped me a lot when I later studied computer science. If I'd had to learn math from scratch when I started programming, getting started might have been much harder.

That's why I still believe building foundational knowledge matters.

Learning isn't only about solving the problem in front of you. It also widens the choices available to your future self.

And without learning what's already known, wouldn't it be hard to go beyond it and create something new?

Has AI made me learn more?

Since I started using AI in my work as a developer, the time I spend on unnecessary trial and error has dropped dramatically.

Problems that used to take hours of searching and experimenting, I now solve much faster with AI's help.

I think this change helps learning a lot, too. In the same amount of time I can try more things and dig deeper into the areas I care about.

But there's one thing I watch out for.

Because AI builds everything for me, I might stop bothering to understand it.

So even when I hand work off to AI, I try to understand what it produces. I ask how it was implemented, or ask it to write down what it did.

The same goes for studying. I ask about what I'm curious about, and when an answer sparks a new question, I ask that too. If an explanation doesn't convince me, I ask for another example or push back.

Going through this process, I feel I actually understand more than I used to.

Of course, there are downsides.

Waiting idly while AI works feels like a waste of time, so I naturally start doing something else. Juggling several tasks at once has made me more productive, but I spend less time immersed in a single problem.

I seem to be doing more and learning more than before, but I also worry about what this does to my ability to focus deeply.

So I don't think learning with AI is unconditionally good.

Then again, more trial and error doesn't automatically mean more learning. You can struggle for hours and learn very little, and you can learn plenty from a problem AI solved for you in minutes.

In the end, what matters isn't how long I struggled, but what I understood along the way and made my own.

Experiences AI can't have for me

I've always loved trying new things.

Learning languages, playing instruments, exercising, even editing videos. There's so much I want to learn.

AI can tell me how to do these things, but it can't do the experiencing for me.

Keeping time on an instrument, making mistakes in practice, and one day pulling off something you couldn't do before: you only get that by doing it yourself.

Isn't development similar?

Even if AI writes the code, there's learning in actually using the result, running into problems you didn't expect, and thinking through why they happened.

That doesn't mean you have to go through every bit of trial and error yourself.

When AI shows you how others have failed, you can avoid needless failures. But I think avoiding failure and having the ability to learn from failure are slightly different things.

And above all, what matters is the ability to judge for yourself.

For example, if AI suggests a different design is better than mine, I'll look at it and judge again. I'll ask why it's better and compare its reasoning with what I know.

Can't I learn something new in that process, too?

I believe that not just accepting AI's answer, but judging it, is learning as well.

Of course, I can't know every field well. So in areas I don't know, I ask AI for more explanation and evidence, and check things myself when needed.

In the end, I think someone who uses AI well isn't someone who leaves everything to AI, but someone who uses it to expand their own understanding and judgment.

The possibility of learning more

I'm a frontend developer.

Since I've mostly worked on the frontend, I'm less familiar with the server side. In the past, if I'd wanted to build a full web service including the backend, my first thought would have been that there was far too much to learn.

But now, with AI's help, I'm building web services that include the server side.

Even when I run into a technology I don't know, I can just give it a try. I let AI handle the implementation, ask how it's structured, and go back and study the parts I don't understand.

Of course, AI building it doesn't mean I fully understand backend development. If anything, there are many moments when I see more clearly what I don't know.

What matters is that challenges I once would have hesitated to even begin, I can now start far more easily.

I can build on my own expertise and extend my experience into other areas.

This shift isn't limited to development.

To learn a new field, there's less need to follow a formal curriculum or sit through an entire long course. You can start with whatever you're curious about and build experience by learning what you need as you go.

As AI lowers the barrier to learning, I feel the range of things I can take on is itself getting wider.

Of course, we should be wary of producing results without really understanding the fundamentals. But maybe we can be a little freer from the pressure of having to study everything perfectly before we begin?

I want to learn better, so I can experience more

Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I like AI is that it saves me time.

There's so much I want to learn.

As a developer, I want to study beyond the frontend and build services with new technologies.

At the same time, there's a lot I want to experience outside of development. I want to learn juggling, play more music, and run a YouTube channel. I want to check off, one by one, the bucket list I've put off for lack of time.

But with so much to study for work, I've sometimes had to give up on other interests to some degree.

What if AI let me handle the studying and work I need to do more efficiently?

I could spend that time learning new technologies, or trying hobbies I've never had the chance to.

The possibility of not having to give up on what I want to learn.

That's the change I'm most looking forward to in learning in the age of AI.

Of course, if I just fill the time AI saves with more work, I could end up busier than before. So I think how to use that time is also a choice I have to make for myself.

As AI advances, the ways we gain knowledge will keep changing. But I think the desire to be curious about new things, to experience them firsthand, and to learn by judging for myself will remain.

In an age when AI can do everything for us, I want to use AI to do more things myself.
